A strong earthquake was felt across Delhi-NCR at 5:36 am on February 17. A large number of people came out of their homes. People in areas like Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonipat and Meerut were reported to have felt the tremors. According to official data, the epicentre of the earthquake was Delhi. The magnitude was 4.0 on the Richter scale.
But don't worry, your smartphone will alert you if an earthquake occurs. This feature is available on both Android and iPhone. Find out how to turn on the feature.
According to a Google blog post, the earthquake warning feature on Android phones is available in several countries, including India. However, it was recently disabled in Brazil. If you are an Android user, follow these simple steps.
How to get earthquake alerts on your phone
- First, open your smartphone's settings.
- Then tap on the Safety and Emergency option.
- Now click on the Earthquake Alerts option.
- Toggle the switch to turn on the feature.
Once this feature is enabled, you will receive updates about earthquakes occurring near you. However, it is important to note that this warning system is only active for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 or greater and does not work for earthquakes of lower intensity.
How does the feature work?
Every Android smartphone has an accelerometer, which works like a seismometer. This sensor detects vibrations. It sends alerts to users when an earthquake is felt. If your phone is charged, it can quickly detect the early stages of an earthquake and issue an alert.
